Our Review.
This is a great activity for listening and following instructions as well as physical development! We cut the Lard up together and Ayla helped throw the bird seed in! Ayla absolutely loves pouring, so she decided she just wanted to continue pouring the seeds between her stacking cups so I did the rest.
When doing activities with our little ones its really important to let them take lead. Could I of made Ayla help me mix the lard? Maybe. Would there of been tears? Definitely! At that point it just becomes stressful for everyone involved and Ayla wouldn’t of gained anything out of the activity. So go with the flow! I normally have a goal in mind with each activity but if we don’t get there it doesn’t matter!
Resources.
. Pinecones, you want ones that have opened up so you can get the mixture inside.
. string or wool
. A block of lard
. Birdseed
. Mixing bowl
. Butter knife
Method.
. Tie your string around the pinecone so you are able to hang it up once its finished!
. Put the lard into the mixing bowl and use the butter knife to cut it into smaller pieces.
. Pour in the bird seed and use your hands to mix it all together. Keep adding the bird seed until you are happy with the mixture.
. Push the mixture into the pinecones, at this point the recipe I found told me to put them in the fridge for an hour which I did…. but I don’t know what difference that made.
. So if your feeling brave go ahead and hang them up, if not wrap them in tin foil and pop them in the fridge for a little while.
