Alien Craft Idea – Recycle and Play

I spent ages trying to find a space or alien toy for Ayla but there was none in my budget, so I decided to make our very own Aliens and planets with this craft idea. Ayla loved making the aliens and then using them in our small world set up later on! So I’m going to call that a win.

This is the paint I use for any of our crafts and the paint I used in the images above.

My hot glue gun is used so often! It’s a must have for me.
I’ll share more activities where I have used it soon.

You can also buy the glue sticks in bulk!! It’s so much cheaper to buy them this way.

Setting Up.

First cut your egg box up so you are left with just the pockets your egg sits in. Trim them so they roughly sit flat and get your little one to paint them green (or whatever colour you like) Once they are dry decorate them with your stickers and googly eyes for the baby alien or you could make the parent alien by cutting a small strip of cardboard out and gluing either end of it the the inside of two egg pockets to make a hinge.

Making The Most Out Of The Alien Craft Idea.

As with all crafts I let Ayla explore the activity in her own way, to be honest she wasn’t massively interested in this one, she instead decided to paint herself! Apparently she was a turtle… (see the picture below)

Talk about the marks being made or even the colours but for the most part just let them explore!

Activities Like This Are Great For;

Encouraging communication and language and you explore the activity together talking about colours, shapes and marks.

Supporting physical development as they practice their hand eye coordination to make marks, as well as their fine motor skills to hold the paint brush.

Promoting early literacy as they explore the different marks they can make and begin to give a meaning to each mark.

Boosting expressive arts and design as they get creative with their alien craft.

Creating The Planets

Resources For The Planet Craft

  • Cardboard
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Paint
  • Hot Glue Gun

Setting Up

Draw three circles onto the cardboard in varying sizes and cut them out. Draw a line through the middle of each one, cut this line so you have a total of six semi circles. Now paint your planets, I made Earth, the Moon and the Sun. Once they are dry use the hot glue gun to glue each planet together at a right angle. Add the aliens into the set up and you have your very own small work space invitation to play.

Small World Activities are great for;

Boosting speech as they role play situations through out their play.

Promoting imagination as they create their very own story with the aliens.

Builds an understanding of their community. Children will often role play things they have seen or been a part of, they do this to make sense of the world around them.
